Swimming Near Hocking Hills: Lakes, Beaches, and Where to Cool Off

Updated 2026-03-28 · ~1100 words · 5 min read

The most common surprise for first-time Hocking Hills visitors: swimming is banned in all state park waterways. Every stream, waterfall, pool, and creek within Hocking Hills State Park is off-limits for swimming. The ban exists to protect the fragile sandstone formations, prevent erosion, and ensure visitor safety in flash-flood-prone gorges. But the region has excellent swimming alternatives — three lakes within a short drive offer beaches, boat rentals, and fishing.

Lake Logan State Park

The closest and most convenient swimming option for cabin visitors, Lake Logan sits just minutes from Hocking Hills on SR-664. The 400-acre lake is surrounded by 318 acres of parkland and features a 527-foot swimming beach — the primary summer destination for Hocking Hills visitors looking to cool off.

Beyond swimming, Lake Logan offers boat rentals with motors up to 10 horsepower and some of the finest fishing in Ohio. Species include northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, saugeye, and muskie — the kind of diversity that makes serious anglers plan trips specifically around Lake Logan. The Buckeye Trail passes through the northwest end of the park, connecting Lake Logan to the broader Hocking Hills trail network.

Lake Logan is a day-use park — no overnight camping or lodging. Facilities include restrooms, picnic areas, and a beach access area. The beach is unsupervised (swim at your own risk), and gets busy on summer weekends. Arrive before 11 AM on Saturdays for the best spot selection.

Lake Hope State Park

Located about 40 minutes south of Old Man's Cave within the 26,824-acre Zaleski State Forest, Lake Hope offers a distinctly different experience from Lake Logan. The 120-acre C-shaped lake has a 600-foot beach with a concession stand — a proper beach day setup with snacks and drinks available on-site.

Lake Hope is a fuller destination than Lake Logan: 7 hiking trails totaling 17+ miles, 25+ miles of mountain biking trails (including the nationally recognized Copperhead and Wildcat systems), and a boat ramp. The summer hummingbird hand-feeding program at the nature center is a unique draw — visitors literally hold feeders while hummingbirds land on their hands.

The lake's lodge restaurant has historically been a highlight — known for hickory-smoked BBQ and a 4.7-star Google rating. Note: As of early 2026, the Lake Hope Lodge Restaurant appears to be temporarily closed. Call the State Park Office at 740-596-5253 to check current reopening status before planning a meal there.

For dog owners: Lake Logan and Lake Hope beaches are for humans only. If you need a place for your dog to swim, Lake Alma State Park (about 30 minutes south of Hocking Hills) has a dedicated dog swim area separate from the human beaches — one of the few such designated areas in the Ohio state park system.

Lake Alma State Park

The smallest and least crowded of the three lakes, Lake Alma sits approximately 30 minutes south of Hocking Hills near Wellston. It offers two swimming beaches and the dedicated dog swim area mentioned above. The lake is quieter and more family-friendly than the larger options, with picnic shelters, fishing access, and short hiking trails.

Summer Cooling Strategies on the Trails

If you are hiking in summer heat without a lake detour, the Hocking Hills gorges provide natural relief. Gorge temperatures run 10–15°F cooler than ridgetops thanks to hemlock canopy and sandstone microclimate. Ash Cave and Conkle's Hollow gorge trail are the coolest options — their deep, narrow profiles trap cold air even on the hottest days. Arrive at trailheads by 7:30 AM to beat both the heat and the crowds — summer weekends peak between 10 AM and 4 PM at Old Man's Cave.

Carry more water than you think you need. Trail access to potable water is essentially nonexistent in the state park, and stream water should never be consumed without treatment. Most trailhead parking areas have pit toilets but no water fountains.

What About Kayaking and Canoeing?

Lake Logan allows boats with motors up to 10 HP, and kayaks and canoes are welcome. Several outfitters near Logan and Nelsonville rent kayaks for use on the Hocking River, which flows through the valley and offers a scenic flatwater paddle. Check local outfitters for current rental availability, pricing, and river conditions — water levels vary significantly by season.
